First Light Books welcomes Heather Woofter and Sung Ho Kim, co-directors of the architecture practice Axi:Ome, for a book talk celebrating the release of Invisible. The evening will include a moderated conversation and a book signing — presented in partnership with the UT Austin School of Architecture community.

About the Authors

Heather Woofter is Dean of The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture and co-director, with Sung Ho Kim, of the architecture practice Axi:Ome. She earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech and a Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Before entering academia full-time, she practiced in the United States and London with firms including Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Robert Luchetti Associates, and Marks Barfield. Woofter taught for two decades at Washington University in St. Louis, where she served as graduate architecture chair and director of the College of Architecture, overseeing programs in architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture.

Her teaching, research, and leadership have emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration, community-engaged design, faculty development, and international education. Through Axi:Ome, she works across architectural design, urbanism, exhibitions, and research, with projects ranging from cultural and educational buildings to resilient urban infrastructure. Her curatorial and scholarly work has addressed metabolic systems, citizen space, resilient cities, and the relationship between architecture and broader cultural and environmental contexts.

Sung Ho Kim is an architect, artist, educator, and co-director, with Heather Woofter, of Axi:Ome. He is currently Architecture Program Director and Urban Design Program Director in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University. He earned degrees in fine arts and architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design, an AA Diploma from the Architectural Association in London, and a Master of Science in Architecture Studies from MIT, where his research connected architecture with aeronautics, material science, and the history of technology.

He has practiced in Paris and Cambridge and served as a researcher at MIT's Center for Advanced Visual Studies. Kim has taught architecture, industrial design, and biology at institutions including RISD, Northeastern University, Washington University in St. Louis, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and Konkuk University. Since co-founding Axi:Ome in 2003, he has worked across architecture, art, speculative research, and interdisciplinary design. The practice's built work includes the 58,000-square-foot expansion of COCA and the 180,000-square-foot Silverlake International High School in Hangzhou, and its work has received numerous awards and been exhibited internationally.
