About the Event

First Light Books' courtyard becomes a celebration of kids' literature on October 17, in partnership with the Texas Book Festival's KUT Kids series. Three beloved Austin-based creators — Don Tate, Eliza Kinkz, and Anne Wynter — will each take the stage for their own 20–30 minute segment, mixing live illustration, read-alouds, and Q&A with young audience members. It's a morning built for kids and the grown-ups who read to them.

Eliza Kinkz
Eliza Kinkz is a Tejana artist who never stopped viewing the world through the bright colors of her crayons, AND she even ate a few, too! She's illustrated many hilarious picture books, including Papá's Magical Water-Jug Clock by Jesús Trejo which won the Pura Belpré Illustration Honor, and was the 2022 James Marshall Fellow. All her ridiculous scribbles burst straight from her heart, which is overflowing with joy... and probably a few crayon pieces. Eliza lives in Austin, Texas, with her family and her one true love, a huge bowl of queso. Mistaco is her author-illustrator debut.

Don Tate
Don Tate is an award-winning author and illustrator of numerous critically acclaimed books for children, as well as a founding host of The Brown Bookshelf, designed to raise awareness of the myriad Black voices writing for young readers. His accolades include two Ezra Jack Keats Awards and an honor, the Carter G. Woodson Book Award, a Christopher Award, a Lee & Low New Voices Honor, and a Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List selection, among many others. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Tate currently resides in Austin, Texas, with his wife and son.

Anne Wynter
Anne Wynter is the author of numerous board books and picture books, including While We're Here, So Many Years, Everybody in the Red Brick Building, and Nell Plants a Tree. Her books have won the Ezra Jack Keats Award, the Golden Kite Award and the Brigid Erin Flynn Award from the Texas Institute of Letters. Originally from Houston, Anne currently lives in Austin, Texas, with her family. ​
