Artist and educator Elizabeth Chiles celebrates the release of her new artist book Time Being, an evocative exploration of landscape, perception, and the passage of time. Join Elizabeth in conversation with art historian and curator Sarah Bancroft.

Elizabeth Chiles releases Time Being, a contemplative artist book that transports through a physical and mental landscape. The 52-page volume features full bleed color illustrations and hand-sewn construction, creating a meandering experience through a garden, physically perceived and internally explored.​

Chiles' ongoing interest in the collaborative nature of being in the world, of both shaping experiences and being shaped by them, is strongly felt in this project. Her work continues to evolve through solo exhibitions and new works, with two spreads that explore the act of looking with a camera and the process of being in relation over time.

About the book

About Elizabeth Chiles

Elizabeth Chiles is an artist and educator specializing in phenomenology, perception, and ecology. She has taught at the University of Texas, Austin and Texas State University, been featured in Austin Home, The Austin American-Statesman, The Austin Chronicle and shown her work at The Ransom Center, The Contemporary Austin, and galleries throughout the country. She is represented by Richard Levy Gallery in New Mexico and is currently in an international group exhibition at Almanaque Fotografica in Mexico City. Elizabeth lives in Austin with her family and the wild meadow that surrounds her studio.

About Sarah C. Bancroft

Sarah C. Bancroft is an art executive and curator who finds elegant solutions to the creative challenges facing art museums, foundations, and institutions. With 20+ years of experience (at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, OCMA, Richard Diebenkorn Foundation, James Rosenquist Foundation, and testsite/Fluent Collaborative), she has curated nationally and internationally acclaimed exhibitions and currently develops curatorial and institutional strategy as principal at Bancroft Advisory. Her esteemed exhibitions have appeared at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Guggenheim Bilbao (Spain), Menil Collection, MFA Houston, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Orange County Museum of Art, Royal Academy of Arts (London), and Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (Germany). Related publications include James Rosenquist: A Retrospective (2003); The California Biennial (2010); Richard Diebenkorn: The Ocean Park Series (2011); Two Schools of Cool (2012); Love: George Herms (2014); Richard Diebenkorn (2015); and others. She currently lives in Austin, Texas with her son and a native wildflower garden.
